Chilby Photography has a massive collection of stock images with close to 1 million photographs. New Photos of Kiama!

I have recently updated my online Kiama landscape photography gallery, which contains 200 photos of the Kiama area, including shots of Minnamurra, Jamberoo, Kiama, Gerringong, Minnamurra Rainforest and more. Apart from the images that you see on my website, I have 10,000 plus photos of the Kiama and surrounding area. To the right you can see a picture of a Lyrebird taken on a recent hike along the Hoodles track. It was captured on the way back from the summit of Mount Noorinan, that offers spectacular views of the South Coast and of the Illawarra.

Kangaroos on the Illawarra Escarpment!

I have been hiking the Illawarra Escarpment since I was a kid and up until last week have never seen a wild Kangaroo on the Illawarra Escarpment range or on the coastal plateau. I was told that they never lived in the Illawarra, even before settlement. I was hiking on Mount Noorinan west of Kiama on a windy afternoon and came across a large family of Eastern Grey Kangaroos, at first sight I thought they were Wallabies, but after looking through my lens realised they were roos. I got a number of photos from quite a distance of the family. It is also quite rare for Kangaroos to live on steep slopes. Henson's Bus Service, Corrimal

Recently my Dad mentioned that he had my great grandfather's 1930's Hensons Bus Service coat. My great grandfather is Abe Henson and he was the manager of Henson's Bus Service at Corrimal. Henson's Bus Service had a depot in Midgley Street at Corrimal and operated between 1929 and 1969. They mainly serviced Wollongong and the northern suburbs of Wollongong. The business was started by my great great grandfather Harry Henson who came Australia from Nottingham in the early 1900's. In the photo to the right and on the right of the photo you can see Abe Henson with Neville Williams by his side, in their Henson's Bus Service uniforms. It also features the Henson's coat today, which is almost 100 years old. Click on the photo to the right to see more old historical photos from Wollongong.

I mainly promote my landscape photography online via my website and social media pages, but I also love shooting events. I have been regularly photographing events since 2017 and have covered many business functions and networking meets as well as birthday party's and more. It was nice to come across an article by Giggster who named Chilby Photography as one of the top event photographers in Wollongong. I do cover events in Wollongong and right across the Illawarra, however I am also available to shoot in the Highlands, Shoalhaven, Wollondilly and Sutherland Shire regions. Snow at Robertson

As far back as primary school I can remember wanting to see snow on the Illawarra Escarpment and particularly at Robertson. Back in 2018 I saw a few flurries at Sublime Point Bulli Tops, but nothing on the ground and after many unsuccessful trips up Macquarie Pass when snow has been forecast, it always resulted in none. Last month in May 2023 we hard a very cold day of about 15 degrees on the coast and then a storm front rolled in at about 9pm and the temperatures dropped briefly to about 5 degrees on the coast. I saw a video pop up on social media at 10.30pm of snow falling at Robertson so I grabbed my camera gear and a snow jacket and headed up the mountain. I missed the best of the rare Robertson snow falling but I was fortunate enough to still see some on the ground like on the photo to the right. Hopefully there will be more Robertson snow to come this Winter.

This was a recent order of Wollongong souvenirs, it was purchased by the University of Wollongong and taken to Japan to give as gifts. All of Chilby Photography's souvenirs are Australian made and locally printed. Broker's Nose Photo

I started shooting landscapes seriously with a DSLR camera back in 2008/2009. Prior to this I did often take photos on my hikes, travels and if there was wild weather events happening. They were just snaps on an old compact Olympus 8 mega pixel camera. I was recently looking for a photo of my grandparents from 2007 and I came across this photo of Broker's Nose captured in 2007. It predates Chilby Photography. The quality isn't as good as my full frame DSLR but it was an amazing sky captured over an amazing mountain that I have spent many hours hiking up.

Event Photography!

I almost always post my landscape photography on social media and most of the photos on my website are of course landscapes as I absolutely love shooting the great outdoors but I also love doing event photography and  I do quite a lot of it.

Recently I did a shoot for the Sutherland Shire business chamber in southern Sydney and Samantha from the chamber took this photo of me doing a group shot. This one would have to be one of my favourite photos of myself shooting. Thank you Samantha for sharing this photo. Happy New Year!

I would like to wish all my customers, supporters and followers a very happy, healthy and prosperous year ahead in 2023! Thank you very much for all of your support in 2022 and hopefully 2023 will be another great year. I would also like to thank all of my social media followers across all of the Chilby Photography accounts, including Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin and Twitter. Over the past 4 months I have been posting my daily photograph across my accounts, but I am now also including a little bit of Illawarra history with each post, in 2022 it became a massive hit. In 2023 I will be looking to expand upon this to provide even more information about our amazing region.

The Biggest Canvas Sold to Date!

This week I sold my largest ever mounted canvas to Southern Pathology head office in Coniston, Wollongong. It is a whopping 2500mm x 1500mm and almost takes up the entire wall.

The canvas can be seen by the staff working on the floor below and it was hung to brighten up the sterile white walls and also to remind the staff of the area of the Illawarra and South Coast that they service.

Rest in Peace - Queen Elizabeth II

Today was a very sad day in our history and the end of an era in British and Australian life, with the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. For many of us she was the only Queen we had known in our lifetime and was a strong and stable figure in a rapidly changing, dangerous and chaotic world. The queen visited Wollongong in 1954 and 1970 with tens of thousands of people coming out to see the Queen and Prince Phillip on both occasions. In 1970 the Queen proclaimed Wollongong as a city, which it has since been known as the City of Wollongong. During her visit she also granted the mayor of Wollongong with the title of Lord Mayor which is still in place today. My grandparents like many in Wollongong went to see the new Queen in 1954 and the photo you can see to the right is of the Wollongong show ground during the visit. I have to say that I myself feel saddened by her death and it has certainly effected me more then I thought it would as it has for many others.

Chased by a Brown Snake!

During the last week of Winter on a cool but sunny day, I stopped off at Lake George on the way home from Canberra. It's a spot I often stop at and after a short walk on a gravel path to get some photos, I stumbled upon a group of snakes basking in the sun, I was suddenly within in a metre of them. It's quite rare for Brown snakes to be in a group but there were two adult snakes and 3 smaller snakes. Four of the snakes took off to the right and the larger snake came at me and chased me back down the path, adrenaline then kicked in and I bolted down the track jumping across a small creek and going head over onto the gravel. I fell onto a loan camera and lens that I had from Nikon whilst my gear was being serviced and the fall totally destroyed it. Apart from some cuts and bruises I escaped without a snake bite.

Mounted Canvas has been a very popular choice in 2022 with many customers seeking a canvas for their walls. My mounted canvas products are printed locally in Australia on a premium grade of canvas. The photo that you can see to the right is a 20x30 Inch mounted canvas that sold this week and it is heading to a customer in Cairns. The photo on the canvas is a shot from back in 2012 of a stunning snow gum at Perisher called Twisted Beauty.

Huge Glass Prints!

This photograph is a massive 60x40 Inch print with a matboard and silver frame on top. It is the largest framed print that I have done to date and it has no pixelation visible. I use Australian timber on my frames and all of my photographic products are made locally with quality Australian materials. This particulary image of Sea Cliff Bridge was purchased by a lovely customer at Austinmer in the Northern Illawrara and they kindly sent me this photograph of it hanging on their wall. When I picked it up from my photo framers it dwarfed all of the other framed prints and artworks in his factory but due to its size this is a custom product with specialised glass and foamboard backing to accomodate for its huge proportions. New Photos of Country New South Wales

I have just returned from a photography trip to the north of New South Wales and have updated my Country NSW gallery with brand new photographs from Tenterfield, Jennings, Glen Innes, Inverell, Warialda, Moree, Armidale and Tamworth. It's an amazing part of the state and I really enjoyed the landscapes and the history of the region.

The Country NSW gallery has photos from right across rural New South Wales including places like Wagga Wagga, Bathurst, Oberon, Orange, Mudgee, Dubbo, Lithgow, Araluen, Crookwell, Jenolan Caves, Cowra, Young, Bombala, Coonamble and many more.

It's one of my favourite parts of the state to visit so I am regularly adding to this gallery.

North Coast and Northern Rivers Landscape Photography!

I recently spent a month in the Northern Rivers and North Coast region of New South Wales and really enjoyed photographing this beautiful part of the country from the beaches to the hinterland and mountain tops it was spectacular. Wollongong - Let's Get Salty

I was privilaged to be asked by Robyn Johnson of Blendesq to be a part of the very first podcast episode she is creating as part of a new series called "Wollongong - Let's Get Salty" which is due for release in March 2022. It's an interesting venture to assist in creating a greater connection to nature and to the place that we live, in this case of course that is Wollongong in the beautiful Illawarra region. We headed to relativity films studio at Towradgi to record the episode. I turned up for the recording very nervous as I generally avoid the spotlight where possible but by the end of the recording, I did enjoy it and certainly learned a lot from it.I wish Robyn all the very best for her Podcase release and future episodes, I think she has an important message to tell and promote and I'm sure it will be a popular venture.

Big canvases delivered!
This massive 80x50 Inch mounted canvas of Minnamurra Falls was delivered to a new office building in Wollongong NSW. It hasn't been hang up just yet, but I was so exicted to see what it is going to look I just had to share it as you can see to the right.

It's massive, it's sharp and has no pixelation at all, it will feel like you can be there right at the base of Minnamurra Falls and will hopefully provide a sense of calming at the office. That is the feeling I personally associate with the sound of running water through the forest and the beautiful sight of a waterfall.

Over to the right you will see a massive custom sized 50x80 Inch mounted canvas still at my photo framers factory. It's a photo of Minnamurra Falls taken back in 2015. A look back whilst in lockdown!
This terrible Covid 19 lockdown is certainly taking its toll in many ways and as I'm not out shooting like I was before the lockdown, I have been looking back through my many thousands of photos that I have taken over the years and am picking out anything I may have missed. These photos date all the way back to 2008 and many I have long forgotten about. I have been posting some of them to my two instagram pages as welll as my facebook page and will continue to do so over the next few months. A photo from 11 Years Ago!
This is a quick revisit to a photo I took 11 years ago in the Blue Mountains. I was shooting landscapes in the area with my brother and noticed this talented didgeridoo player with a loads of chracter. We had a chat and asked if we could get a photo together along with a couple of him playing the didgeridoo, next minute this little white boy wandered up to the Aboriginal man and they smiled at each other, I thought it was a nice moment and snapped this random photo. It was one of the first people photos I took as I only did landscapes in those days.

A year later the image was noticed on my Facebook page and was used in Central Australia and Darwin in the Northern Territory as part of Reconciliation Week. It was used a backdrop for a conference in the red centre and in a booklet.

Mount Westmacott!
I recently spent a day photographing in the Heathcote National Park west of Waterfall and Heathcote NSW. I have included new photos in the Sutherland Shire gallery of Mount Westmacott, Lake Toolooma and Kingfisher Pool, I also visited yelgun cave and Bondel Pool in the same day.Mount Westmacott sits west of waterfall and stands at 275 metres high, it's not a massive mountain but it is the 3rd highest mountain in the Sutherland Shire region and does have some beautiful 360 degrees views of the Heathcote National Park.

The 9 Best Landscape Photographers in Sydney!
I was very excited to accidently come across this article by Peerspace - The 9 Best Landscape Photographers in Sydney where Brad Chilby from Chilby Photography was mentioned at number 4 which is quite exciting and also very rare. As the article mentions I only shoot one image single exposured and always have as opposed to stacked HDR images. I enjoy trying to do the best to capture the image as it is on the camera on the day rather then completely altering the image in Photoshop and this makes it very hard and if not impossible to compete in competitions and for articles like this. I've always said there should be seperate competitions those that are true photographs and a seperate competition for digital art.

As you would be aware Wollongong, Shellharbour and Sydney are in a covid lockdown until the 10th of July 2021. As a result Chilby Photography will remain completely OPEN to take online or over the phone orders for any photo products, stock images or gift vouchers.

During this lockdown period photography lessons will cease due to the new social distancing guidelines and and will re open on the 12th of July if the lockdown concludes on the 10th of July as planned.

Landscapes of the Sutherland Shire...
From the Royal National Park to the Woronora River and over to Cronulla, I have spent a lot of time over the past twelve months photographing the Sutherland Shire region in southern Sydney. I have aimed to bring you photographs from parts of this region that you may have not seen before. In particular I focused a lot on and around the Woronora River including places like Bonnet Bay, Woronora, Barden Ridge and Engadine, along with new photos from Cronulla and the Port Hacking area. PDC Lawyers Office at Nowra.
PDC Lawyers and Town Planners at Nowra recently purchased and hung two massive canvases in their office in the Nowra CBD. The one in the photo to the right is 87x41 Inches and a second of Ulladulla boat harbour, which is 71x41 Inches.

Contact Us about Non-Reflective glass options!
Although Chilby Photography has set options available online when purchasing artwork, we also have lots of custom options available. One of these options is non reflective glass which has little reflection as you can see to the right, which is a photograph headed to a couple from St Ives in Sydney. The non reflective glass is a little more expensive then regular glass but it is fantastic in rooms exposed to outside or even bright indoor light. There are different strengths of non reflection and in this particular photo, it is a medium strength non reflective glass.

Canvas is Popular in 2021!
2021 has brought about a spike in mounted canvas sales, with many canvases going all over Australia, more then ever before. In particular most are going to Queensland, Western Australia and rural New South Wales which is a change to normal. In the past most orders were to local Wollongong customers. So far it's been an exciting year with many new opportunities.

Coal Coast Mag
Earlier in February I worked with Coal Coast Magazine to capture a photograph of Lawrence Hargrave drive in the Northern Illawarra for the front cover of Issue 12 which marks 3 years of Coal Coast magazine in the Illawarra.

I hired a plane to capture this image flying high over the Northern Illawarra, which was fitting as the cover image was to complement the main article in the magazine about Lawrence Hargrave himself, an aviation pioneer who made a historic first flight attempt at Stanwell Park.

Camping for Photos!
I recently returned from a four day camping trip in the Deua National Park west of Moruya with Paul Dickson from Nature Engadgement Tours. It was a great trip to gather some photos of remote places for Paul's business and for myself. We had a range of conditions which was great for photography. Somewhere over the Rainbow skies are blue!
Thanks for your support through a rather difficult 2020. As the year comes to a close let's hope that the skies are blue on the other side and 2021 is a much brighter, healthier and happier year for everyone then 2020.

I'll sign off for the year with this photo of a vibrant rainbow at sunset over Wollongong Harbour and Flagstaff Hill, taken in September 2014, back at a time when a pandemic like Covid 19 wasn't a consideration.

Photography from a Kayak!

I recently purchased a new kayak to expand my photography portfolio of new photos from locations previously difficult to get to. I took it out for the first time on the weekend on a 43 degrees day and got severly burnt, but learnt some good lessons for the next trip. I'm looking forward to more photos of the Minnamurra River, Lake Illawarra and the Woronora River in the near future and will hopefully bring you some new perspectives and places.

A New View of Wollongong...

I recently did a photoshoot from the top floor of the new Avante Towers in Rawson Street, Wollongong, which is 65 metres high and over looking the city of Wollongong with views extending towards the Northern Illawarra in the north, the escarpment to the west and Port Kembla and Saddleback mountain to the south. The views from the top were spectacular in every direction and were a great reminder of what an amazing part of the World Wollongong is and what a great place it is to live.
